Viswanathan Anand is playing the first on-board game in Croatia after a break of almost 15 months, the Grand Chess Tour Rapid and Blitz Tournament

Mumbai, July 5th: After a break of almost 15 months, the Indian Grandmaster (GM) Viswanathan Anand will play his first over-the-board chess game at the Croatia Grand Chess Tour Rapid and Blitz tournament in Zagreb on Tuesday. The tournament consists of 10 elite GMs who compete over nine rounds of rapid chess and 18 rounds of blitz chess. In rapid chess, each player has 25 minutes to complete the game, with a time of 10 seconds added after each move. In Blitzspiel, players are given five minutes to play, with two seconds of increment time added after each move.

The additional attraction in the Blitz department is the presence of chess legend and former world champion Garry Kasparov, who competes as a wildcard player invited by the organizers. Anand and Kasparov have fought many memorable battles, including the final of the PCA World Championship on the 107th floor of the south tower of the World Trade Center in New York in September-October 1995. Anand will take part in both rapid and lightning competitions in Croatia.

Anand has been in Croatia for the past few days to acclimate and comply with regulations regarding COVID-19 protocols. The rapid game will be played from July 7th to 9th, while the blitz games will be played on July 10th and 11th.

He helped India finish first with Russia in last year’s FIDE Online Chess Olympiad. He has also run training and education programs for the WestBridge Anand Chess Academy (WACA) and has also helped some of the country’s emerging players.

The 2021 edition of the Grand Chess Tour (GCT) – a series of classic, rapid and blitz tournaments with prize money of $ 1.5 million and with the participation of top players from around the world – features two classic and three rapid and Blitz tournaments. The GCT, which was launched in 2015, did not take place last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Two events – the Superbet Chess Classic (June 3-15) and Paris GCT Rapid and Blitz (June 16-23) – have already been held, while two more – Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz (August 9-16 ) and Sinquefield Cup (August 16-28) – will be played next month in Saint Louis, USA.
