Heinz Field could offer the Denver Broncos a stage for redemption starting on quarterback Sunday against the Steelers.
Links between Mike Tomlin and Aaron Rodgers are still being extracted. Gerrit Cole gets a playoff start for the New York Yankees.
And guess the ratings for Tom Brady’s return to New England.
All of this in the “First Call” on Tuesday.
Giving back commitment
If Denver Broncos quarterback Drew Lock replaces injured starter Teddy Bridgewater in the line-up against the Steelers, he says he’ll welcome the challenge of returning to Heinz Field.
A place where everything really went wrong for Lock a season ago.
In week 2 last year, Bud Dupree destroyed lock on a strip sack, and he was kicked out of the game. He missed a month with a shoulder injury.
“It will be a good opportunity to return to Pittsburgh,” Lock said of Broncos Wire. “I put some of it to bed from last year. It would be exciting for me to take on reps, work with these guys, get things going, and see what we can do with a good Pittsburgh Steeler team. “
The Steelers won this game by 26:21.
Starting the lock is not guaranteed. But Bridgewater is struggling with a concussion he suffered against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday afternoon. Lock came on the field on Sunday relieved, walking 12 of 21 for 113 yards, no touchdowns and an interception. He was also released three times.
Bridgewater won its first three starts to start the season for Denver. He has yet to throw an interception this year.
Former Pittsburgh Pirates starter Gerrit Cole will have a familiar job at Fenway Park Tuesday night.
The New York Yankees pitcher will play the hill against the Boston Red Sox in the American League Wild Card Game at 8 p.m.
Cole finished the season 16-8 with a 3.23 ERA. His 16 wins led the American League and his 243 strikeouts were second to Toronto’s Robbie Ray (248).
The right-hander struggled with an ERA of 5.13 a month in September. He resulted in 19 earned runs and 46 base hits in 33 innings that were thrown.
Cole started and lost the 2015 National League Wild Card Game in Pittsburgh to the Chicago Cubs. He also lost a crucial game 5 of the NLCS against the St. Louis Cardinals in 2013.
In 2019, however, Cole won a crucial Game 5 with the Houston Astros against the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League Divisional Series. He was 4-1 that postseason with an ERA of 1.72.
In total, Cole has made 13 postseason starts. He’s 8-4 with a 3.56 ERA, 108 strikeouts, and 20 walks. He had two wins in three starts for the Yankees in the last postseason.
Nathan Eovaldi will face Cole for the Red Sox.
TB 12 makes for good television
Tom Brady’s return to New England was exactly the turn-on success expected.
Deadline.com reports that Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers 19-17 win over the Patriots was the second most-watched Sunday Night Football game of all time, with a total viewership of 28.5 million, according to updated data from Nielsen.
It was only surpassed by the 30.3 million on December 30, 2012. It was a showdown between the Dallas Cowboys and Washington for the NFC East title.
This is the beginning
In the second quarter of the Steelers game at Green Bay, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers tried to force his team to the line of scrimmage to punish Mike Tomlin’s defense on the field with too many men.
Tomlin noticed the trick just in time and called for a timeout before Rodgers could grab the ball and take a penalty.
As a result, the network cameras caught the two opponents playing chess with a wink and a nod.

This recognition of mutual respect swept the internet with much speculation as to whether Rodgers wanted to play for Tomlin and the Steelers the next year. Many think Rodgers could force his way out of Green Bay in a trade. And as we reported last week, Pittsburgh is perceived as a potential landing site.
Rodgers started those flames last week Pat McAfee’s show, raves about how much he likes Tomlin as a coach.
Rodgers did this again after Game Sunday when asked about sharing with Tomlin.
“It’s a lot of respect,” Rodgers said. “I haven’t spent a lot of time with him. I watched him from afar for a long time. Much respect for him. I just enjoy the way he talks about his players. I let some friends play there. The stories go very well with the type of daily coach he is. I like his demeanor. It goes perfectly with Iron City. “

Let the bromance begin. Hopefully it ends up in Heinz Field next year.
