GM Wesley So joined the top of the 2021 US Chess Championship after beating GM Dariusz Swiercz with an impressive positional style in round two. GM Daniel Naroditsky recovered from his first-round defeat with a win over GM Jeffery Xiong, while the other games were drawn.
At the US women’s chess championship, WGM Katerina Nemcova scored her second victory in a row. She defeated WGM Sabina-Francesca Foisor and is now the sole leader with 2/2.

Sweircz tried an unusual move in the Sicilian canal attack and got a defended passed pawn on move 12.
GM Fabiano Caruana miraculously escaped from a terrible position in his game against GM Leinier Dominguez. This is an important part of being an elite player: when Caruana is better he usually wins, but when he has lost it is extremely difficult (if not nearly impossible) to beat him. Amazing number two defense in the world!
As for the other games, the first round leaders, GMs John M.Burke and Ray Robson, tied their games against GMs Alexander Lenderman and Sam Sevian, respectively. At some point they were both significantly better, but their opponents never came close to losing the games. GM Sam Shankland gave GM Lazaro Bruzon Batista no problem with white and after all the stones were swapped they agreed to split the point.
Naroditsky, who suffered a heavy loss in the first round, came back today with a win over Xiong – a great win for the popular streamer and commentator!

At the US Women’s Chess Championship, the second round shook the tournament standings as there is now only one leader: Nemcova. She outplayed Foisor in a very instructive positional game after slowly increasing her advantage with the black pieces. We definitely want to learn from this example.
Closely followed by two top seeds and an underdog. These are GM Irina Krush, who drew against WGM Anna Sharevich, IM Carissa Yip, who defeated WGM Tatev Abrahamyan in a sharp gambit line, and WIM Ashritha Eswaran, who had an advantage against IM Nazi Paikidze but had a draw.
