If you want to combine your love of pop culture with old-fashioned table-top fun, Funko has a range of new games that are perfect for your Christmas shopping.
As the holiday season approaches, we’re bringing back our geek tip of the week. Every week before Christmas, we introduce a cool product that we believe is the perfect gift for geeks of all kinds. While so many things are digital, tabletop / board games are still incredibly popular. In fact, they seem to have seen something of a resurgence in recent years. Now that more people are vaccinated and can actually hang out with people in real life, this Christmas is an excellent time to enjoy some old school fun.
Over the past few years, the toy maker’s Funko Games division has produced some interesting board games that appeal to nerds and casual gamers alike. From their original Funkoverse strategy game (I loved hers Jurassic Park Version), to other titles that draw from all corners of pop culture, Funko Games has something for everyone.
This year they brought out even more game options for the people, and their latest slate will make for some excellent gift options. As such, I’m kind of cheating on the “pick” of the week today and going with more than one!
The latest edition of their Funkoverse strategy game series brings the Infinity War and the most powerful heroes on earth to your table. When it comes to choosing one of four iconic heroes (Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Black Panther), you’ll need to use their skills – and your wits – to accomplish a number of goals. There are multiple ways to play, making each time a unique experience, and the toys that come with it are actually now glued to their pedestals. While this may seem like a small thing, it makes it a lot easier to move around the game board and use.
But what use are heroes without villains? The Thanos expansion brings the Mad Titan personally into the Marvel Funkoverse game. Not only do you get the new character, but you also get new scenarios that you can play through as you connect them to the bigger game itself. The combination of these two appeals to nerds and game fans alike.
As always, the coolest thing about Funkoverse titles is that they can be combined with any other Funkoverse title! So that your Avengers can meet anyone from the DC Universe, Jurassic Park, or even the golden girls If you wanted
Older gamers who grew up watching the ’90s sitcom (and those who are just discovering it while streaming it) will surely want to pick up Funko’s Seinfeld game. While it’s supposedly a simple quiz game that tests your knowledge of the show and its characters, it has some fun twists to make it feel fresh. In addition to answering questions, you also need to have challenge cards where you have to pantomime certain things while collecting points and trying to defeat your opponents.
This is definitely an ideal gift for the sitcom-loving nerd on your shopping list. Since it allows up to eight players at a time, it also works perfectly for any vacation plans you have for game nights.
Everything revolves around the family here Fast & Furious Board game … well, not really. It actually comes down to doing some illegal activity and working with your “crew” to get away with it. There are three different scenarios to play through, in which the players have to move their cars strategically across the playing field, attack enemy vehicles and score points for the payload.
For a game based on such a simple premise and the goofy over-the-top action of the films, it’s surprisingly deep. No playing through feels the same and it’s fun to come up with new strategies. Even if you’re not a fan of the movies (or have even seen them), the game is fun and easy to learn and lose.
However, if you know someone who loves the series, they will definitely enjoy finding this under the Christmas tree this year.
This is probably my favorite game from the bundle they sent me, and not just because I enjoy it The goonies. The gameplay itself is ridiculously fun and essentially plays out as a mini tabletop RPG experience (that doesn’t take countless hours).
One player takes on the role of the “Goondocks Master” (also known as the Dungeon Master) who controls the villainous powers of the Fratellis and even One-Eyed Willie. The other players slip into the role of heroic Goonies who have to solve puzzles, avoid traps and whatever else the Goondocks master does to them. The goal is obviously to secure the treasure and escape.
It’s a fun version of the role-playing game that the Goonies know about everything. The miniatures are a fun addition too, delving even deeper into that RPG aesthetic. Best of all, each game only lasts around 50 minutes to an hour. This is how you get all of the fun / elements of an old school tabletop adventure without feeling like you have to invest too much. It’s still kind of a pick-up and play game that the whole family could enjoy.
All in all, Funko Games has launched some impressive new offerings this year. Whether you’re shopping for a movie fanatic or a television lover, there are plenty of solid options out there. All of this is available now.
