Welcome to CPL50, a series in which we reveal the top 50 players of the 2021 Canadian Premier League regular season, voted by a jury of coaches from all eight teams and media from OneSoccer and CanPL.ca.
For more information on the voting process and method, see click here.
York United supplier Max Ferrari comes in 20th on the CPL50 countdown. The 21-year-old from Newmarket, Ontario took part in 27 of 28 regular season games for the Nine Stripes, started 26 of them and played over 2,200 minutes.
Ferrari was signed by the club ahead of the 2020 season in PEI and previously played for the Humber Hawks in the OCAA and for Aurora FC in League1 Ontario.
He played several positions in 2021, mostly on the right wing. He also played on the left flank and in both full-back positions and sometimes played multiple positions in the same game due to substitutions and tactical changes in Jimmy Brennan’s play.
Ferrari scored two goals in the league and added four more assists. He also led the team with 62 fouls won and took third place among the York players in duels won (155).

He was nominated for the CPL’s Canadian Under-21 Player of the Year but ultimately lost to Pacific FC midfielder Alessandro Hojabrpour.
After a strong year in its first full professional season, Ferrari was rewarded with a contract extension until the end of the 2024 CPL season. He’ll be a big part of the club for the next year and beyond, bringing the tactical flexibility and strong all-round skills that every team wants.
The rest of the CPL50 countdown is available here. Five more players will be revealed each day through December 22nd.
