A RuneScape board game and a tabletop RPG are on the way, and both are planning a 2022 launch.
The RuneScape board game was developed by Steamforged Games (the company behind adaptations like the board game Horizon Zero Dawn) in collaboration with RuneScape creator Jagex and will be available on Kickstarter later this year. In the meantime, the RuneScape tabletop role-playing game will go straight to retail and be compatible with the current edition of D&D. That said, it goes well with the best Dungeons & Dragons books.
We don’t know much about either project yet, but both are deeply rooted in Runescape’s fantasy world of Gielinor. With the official press release stating that they’re offering “fresh but faithful adaptations of classic quests and characters,” it seems players will revisit fan-favorite RuneScape missions from the franchise’s 21-year history. They’ll also be able to “craft and upgrade gear, level up their characters, cook special recipes, engage with NPCs, and test their skills as they explore different regions of the world.”
Based on a quote from Jagex CEO Phil Mansell, miniatures should also be part of the experience. Specifically, Mansell noted, “RuneScape and Old School RuneScape players will be thrilled to get their hands on the planned miniatures to create their own adventures with other ‘scapers and boardplayers’.”
The RuneScape TRPG is a “lavishly illustrated” hardcover tome that allows players to create characters who travel through Gielinor. Dungeon Masters can also use its rules to create their own quests.
Interestingly enough, the RuneScape Tabletop RPG is referred to as the “Core Book”. This would imply – or at least suggest – that more could be on the way.
With these two projects, it’s going to be a busy year for Steamforged and video game board games. Alongside these projects, the studio is also releasing a Monster Hunter World board game, and has hinted via a now-deleted blog post that a Sea of Thieves adaptation could appear in the near future.
While you wait for these RuneScape experiences to launch, take some time to browse above Board games for adults or good Board games for 2 players (They are some of the best board games out there).
