POZNAN – Book lovers of all ages will enjoy visiting the newly renovated branch of the Presque Isle District Library in Poznań.

The new branch opened on November 17 at the old location of the McWilliams Funeral Home just south of the village on M-65.

PIDL Director Amber Alexander said the new location makes better use of space, including high ceilings and an open floor plan, as well as a kids’ area and a rentable meeting room that’s available to guests free of charge.

“This is the library of Poznań,” said Alexander during a tour. “We bought it, it paid for itself and we renovated it.”

She said the cost of construction, including renovations, was about $180,000.

“And this during a pandemic when prices have gone up,” Alexander noted. “Wood prices have gone up. So we adjusted to that and we understood the situation. We just wanted to make sure that everything was said and done when we moved here.”

The library rented premises in Poznań.

“We have rented this space for almost 20 years,” Alexander said of the old library space in the village.

You only gained 400 square feet in total, but the layout is more user-friendly, the ceilings are much higher, and taller shelves help with storage.

“It’s on the outskirts of town,” she said of the new location, 11919 M-65, just north of the Elm Highway.

The library is set on a three-acre lot, and Alexander said they are planning some outdoor programs in the spring and summer to take advantage of the land and possibly a community garden.

“I’m just proud of this building,” she said. “It’s an additional beautiful library that we added for the community. I am glad that we were able to complete and move forward with the project.”

The renovation works started in March 2021, the old branch in Poznań was closed in August and the new branch opened in November.

“Only closed for three and a half months,” she said. “I think that’s a pretty good performance… I think it turned out great.”

The Poznań Library is open Mondays from 1 to 7 p.m., Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 5 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is closed on Saturday and Sunday.

A knitting and crocheting group meets on Mondays from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the conference room of the Poznań Library. All levels are welcome. If you have any questions, call 989-734-2477.

The renovated building also includes two new ADA-compliant bathrooms (male and female).

Lynn Altman, Poznań Branch Manager, noted that the library offers more than just books. You can even rent metal detectors there!

“It’s absolutely brilliant,” she said of the new building. “It’s bigger. More space.”

She said the new space will be easier for customers to navigate and will have access to books from all five stores, as well as libraries across Michigan.

“In a small, rural area, people need to benefit,” Altman said.

She added that in addition to metal detectors (free), customers can rent bread machines, electronics, board games and more.

“It’s not just books anymore,” Altman said.

Alexander said that people can throw small parties in the conference room for free.

“You just have to call the manager and talk about possible dates and plan that,” she said. “The only thing is we can’t have people there selling their wares.”

She said the library is looking for a donor to provide a large-screen television for the conference room, which would allow them to name the room in her honor. That cost would be about $1,000, Alexander said. Call her at 989-734-2477 for details.

The PIDL system includes five libraries and the Rogers Theatre. Library locations include Rogers City, Poznan, Onaway, Millersburg, and Grand Lake.

“If you have a Presque Isle District Library card, it will work in all five branches,” Altman noted.

Alexander added that the library’s Rogers Theater is currently the only theater in Presque Isle County and surrounding areas. The theater offers both live productions and feature-length films.
