Jamaica’s Michail Antonio has been shortlisted for the newly created Concacaf 2021 Men’s Player of the Year Award.
The Reggae Boy, who plies his craft at West Ham in England, is among six men nominated for the award. In the newly created category “Female Player of the Year”, six women were shortlisted.
Antonio joined the Reggae Boyz for their World Cup qualifying campaign last year. Despite his brilliance, which included two spectacular goals, the Boyz succumbed to a 1-0 defeat by Costa Rica at the national stadium on Thursday.
National team head coaches and captains, media and fans will vote to determine the winners. Fan voting is now available via Concacaf.com
Concacaf has announced that the 2021 nominees have been selected based on performance statistics and voting by expert panels made up of former professional players and football broadcasters.
To be shortlisted for these awards, all players must meet at least one of the following criteria:
– Have played for the senior men’s or women’s national team of a Concacaf member association in eligible Concacaf and FIFA competitions and matches.
– Regardless of nationality, played for a club (in 2021) in a Concacaf and FIFA sanctioned top division for men or women in the Concacaf region.
Following the nomination process, Concacaf will continue its Football First philosophy with a voting system that will ensure players, coaches, media and fans determine the winners.
The voting process for each award is as follows:
Concacaf Player of the Year (100 total votes)
41 votes: one vote for each Concacaf member association men’s national team head coach 41 votes: one vote for each captain of the men’s national team of Concacaf member associations
9 votes: one vote each for nine representative media representatives from the Concacaf region
9 votes: fan voting through www.concacaf.com. The player with the most fan votes receives four votes in the overall voting, the second-placed two votes, the third-placed two votes (regardless of how many people vote online).
