Meeting with…Len Schlegel | Union College

0

An investigation by the Union’s Director of Institutional Research provides more than just a few interesting facts and figures.

Len Schlegel is a proud indoor man who hates the sun, cold, heat and gardening. When he ventures outdoors, he loves to take his kids to amusement parks and play hockey. An avid New York Rangers fan, he was at Madison Square Garden when the Rangers defeated the Vancouver Canucks and won the Stanley Cup in 1994.

Len Schlegel and his daughters Emma and Julia enjoy the Curse of the Mummy ride at Universal Studios in 2018.

Schlegel says only his closest friends know he’s a board game nerd and owns more than 400 of them. “But not the old classics that people play but have no idea how dated they are, like Monopoly, Clue, and Sorry,” he notes. “There’s a whole world of modern games that people don’t know about and miss out on. ”

Schlegel joined Union in March 2019 after 10 years as a registrar at Albany Medical College and is currently co-chair of the newly formed Union Staff Council.

He has a BS in Management Information Systems and Marketing from UALBany and is married to his high school sweetheart Laura. They have two daughters, Julia, 14, and Emma, 12, and a slightly obese cat named Olivia, who eats four times a day and often features in Schlegel’s Zoom meetings.

FIRST APP YOU LOOK AT TOMORROW:

I check my texts to make sure nothing is on fire. I don’t necessarily wake up to look at any apps…my brain needs a few minutes to thaw before engaging with the world.

A BOOK YOU HAVE READ SEVERAL TIMES:

Easy; “Private Area” by Howard Stern. Hey you asked!

THE BEST ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED:

A wise man once told me never to compromise, whether it’s a job, a relationship, or any other situation in life. Don’t be afraid to be yourself. I can definitely say that anyone who knows me well enough knows that I live by it. When you meet me and work with me, that is menot my agent.

GO-TO BREAKFAST:

Not the healthiest option, but at least three times a week I eat a bowl of Trader Joe’s Chocolate Almond Granola Cereal mixed with Cocoa Pebbles (or Krispies, depending on the day) with bananas. This is how I keep my shape, and frankly, I dare you to find something tastier.

NETFLIX OR AMAZON:

Amazon because it’s included with Prime. Netflix has gotten out of hand with how expensive it has gotten. You can also get music from Amazon and delivery within two days. All that’s left is if they could find someone to clean my house…

FAVORITE PODCAST:

This isn’t strictly a podcast per se, but I still kneel at the altar of the self-proclaimed King of All Media, Howard Stern. I’ve been listening since 1990. To this day, there is nothing quite like his show out there. I challenge anyone to find someone better at interviewing celebrities.

A SKILL YOU WANT TO:

I wish I had the ability to remember people’s names and faces after an interaction. I’m terrible at that. COVID-19 didn’t help anything. It’s not for lack of trying, but it’s super embarrassing to be in my head trying to remember the name of someone I met two minutes ago. So if this happened to you from me, I apologize.

BEST PART OF YOUR DAY:

The best thing is when my work is done. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy what I do, but it’s a very liberating feeling to know that you have free time ahead of you.

LITTLE KNOWN FACTS ABOUT YOU:

Everyone has at least one skill they’re really good at, but that’s practically useless. Mine is “Name That Tune”. When the Beat Shazam game show came out five years ago, I knew I had to get on somehow. I tried for three years and was a finalist twice to advance. I have my fingers crossed that they renew it for another season because the money is mine!so do me a favor and watch it when it airs so it doesnt get canceled.i promise to wear union clothes when i’m on the show.
