Swiss chess players help Ukraine with online charity tournament
To support the humanitarian aid for the Ukrainian population, an online charity chess tournament with the motto “Check, Mate, Donate” will take place on the Lichess platform next Thursday, May 19, from 20:00 to 21:30 CEST.
The entry fee is 5 francs and goes entirely to the Swiss Red Cross for the Ukraine aid. The tournament lasts an hour and a half and will be played in the usual arena mode for lichess tournaments (www.lichess.org). The time limit is 3 minutes + 2 seconds per move.
The two Swiss internationals Nico Georgiadis (in German) and Sebastian Bogner (in English) will commentate on the games live on Twitch. If you have a Twitch account, you can chat live with the two grandmasters.
The initiators of the online tournament are the two Swiss juniors Oliver Angst and Vincent Lou. Both are reigning Swiss U20 champions: Oliver Angst, who plays for Chess Club Olten, in classical chess, Vincent Lou, who plays for ASK Réti Zürich, in rapid chess.
“In recent years we have been generously supported by the Swiss Chess Federation and our clubs, now we want to give something back with our initiative for a good cause,” say the two.
Oliver Angst was already co-organizer of an online tournament for the “Swiss Solidarity”, with 291 participants the largest online chess event in Switzerland to date.
All information, a PDF with the tournament announcement and a registration form can be found on the trilingual website set up especially for the charity tournament:
