The Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) Ottawa BlackJacks bring in a player with league experience.

Calgary native Tyrrel Tate has signed with Ottawa Basketball Club for the remainder of the 2022 CEBL season, the team announced on June 29.

“I’m excited to join the BlackJacks organization,” Tate said in a press release. “It’s a team that wants to make their mark on this league and I’m happy to be a part of it.”

This will be Tate’s third year in the CEBL and the third time he has played for another organization. The six-foot-tall guard played his first season with the Fraser Valley Bandits in 2019 and his second season with the Guelph Nighthawks during the 2020 summer series at St. Catherines.

As a member of the Bandits, Tate averaged 13.9 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 19 games, making up 17 starts.

“Tyrrel is an experienced player who can hit the ball and give us some extra size on the touchline,” said Jevohn Shepherd, BlackJacks general manager and vice president of basketball operations. “His skills and sizes add a little more depth and versatility to our roster.”

Fayetteville State University alumni spent the 2017-18 season with the NBA G League’s Cleveland Charge. He posted a season-high 11 points and hit two triples on February 10 against the Windy City Bulls when he came on from the bench.

“I’m ready to get going with my teammates and staff, and I want to influence the team in a winning way,” added Tate.

With a record three wins and seven losses in their first ten games, the BlackJacks travel to Hamilton for their sixth away game of the season on Friday, July 1 at 4pm
