CM Naveen passes the Chess Olympiad torch to Padmini Rout in Odisha


Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik marked a glorious moment for chess in India and Odisha by presenting the first ever Chess Olympiad relay torch to Padmini Rout at an event at the Convention Center in Loka Seva Bhawan today.

On that occasion, the Chief Minister said that this is a proud moment for India as it hosts an international sporting event like the Chess Olympiad in the 75th year of independence. He added that chess originated in India and is known as Chaturang.

WGM Kiran Manisha Mohanty brought a relay torch to Loka Seva Bhawan and presented it to AOCA’s Chief Patron, Dr. Achyuta Samant. The Prime Minister received the torch from Dr. Samant. Both Kiran and Padmini are celebrated international chess players from Odisha. Up to 6 players from Odisha, including Padmini Rout, will participate in Chess Olympiad in Chennai.

OThe Prime Minister said that Odisha had good results in chess. Some of our players have done exceptionally well in national and international events. In addition, in 2016 we organized the World Junior Chess Championship. We want to continue to strengthen the game nationwide, especially in schools. This is a game that’s easy to spread since it doesn’t require a lot of infrastructure or equipment. We will hold regular school and college level competitions and promote the game in a professional manner, he said, expressing his vision for chess promotion.

The CM extended his best wishes to All India Chess Federation, All Odisha Chess Federation, Government of India and Government of Tamil Nadu for organizing this great event, saying that probably for the first time in India, representatives from around 200 countries will be attending a sporting event.

The Prime Minister said that India has produced some of the best chess players in the world. This mega event will further boost the game and create future champions, he added.

He said he was pleased that the torch relay would be brought to our heritage sites in Puri and Konark.

He wished the best of luck to the Indian contingent taking part in this Olympiad. He hoped for the victory of the Indian contingent.

The Olympic Relay Torch was received by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on June 19 and presented to Grand Master Viswanathan Anand. The relay torch is carried to 75 famous places in India including Bhubaneswar, Puri and Konark in Odisha.
On that occasion, Sports Minister Tushar Kanti Behera said that Odisha has received immense appreciation in the field of sports under Prime Minister Naveen Patnaik’s visionary leadership. We build sports infrastructures according to international standards and organize quite successfully international sports events.

Main patron of the AOCA, Dr. Achyut Samant, in his welcome speech, praised the chief minister for his phenomenal efforts in building sports infrastructure and promoting sports. He also appreciated the introduction of Olympic values ​​education in Odisha.
