Nick Kyrgios and Stan Wawrinka once had to be separated to avoid a big fight in the dressing room, says former Canadian Open director Eugene Lapierre

The dispute between Nick Kyrgios and Stan Wawrinka is not a hidden secret in the tennis world. However, things were about to get ugly between the two men’s tennis stars and they had to be separated to avoid a major fight, according to former Canadian Open director Eugene Lapierre.

The incident happened during a match between the two players at the Canadian Open in 2015 when Lapierre was in the lead. Kyrgios steered a dirty sled towards Wawrinka on the pitch and the Swiss player only found out exactly what Kyrgios had said after the game, Lapierre revealed.

An “enraged” Wawrinka then rushed into the dressing room and confronted Kyrgios, to say the least. Lapierre recounted the events of that day, stating that things would have gotten serious if their confrontation hadn’t been interrupted by others in the dressing room.

“Wawrinka hadn’t heard, but Kyrgios’ comments were televised because of the microphones in the pitch,” said Eugene Lapierre Journal de Quebecaccording to TVA Sports.

“In a press conference, a journalist informed him of what had been said. Wawrinka was furious! It’s like he lost face in front of everyone. He quickly went down to the dressing room, where Kyrgios was still. They had to be separated.” , because it was in danger of degenerating quickly,” he added.

Nick Kyrgios, who has been known for numerous controversies during the Games over the years, told Wawrinka that fellow Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis “beat up your girlfriend”. Kyrgios was referring to WTA star Donna Vekic who was dating Wawrinka at the time. The comment understandably infuriated Wawrinka, who later took to social media to express his thoughts on his opponent’s behavior.

“What was said, I would not say to my worst enemy. Stopping so low is not only unacceptable, it’s incredible,” said Stan Wawrinka wrote on Twitter after the game.

At the time, Stan Wawrinka called for action against Nick Kyrgios over his inappropriate comments and personal taunts towards Wawrinka, which were heard around the world. The three-time Grand Slam champion called on the ATP to take strict action against Kyrgios and explained that the Australian had often behaved unsportsmanlike towards opponents.

Kyrgios apologized to Wawrinka on social media after their heated exchange. He was later fined $10,000 and 28-day ban by the ATP for his comments during the game. However, a few months after the incident, Kyrgios hinted that he patched the fences with Wawrinka.

Since then, they have faced each other on the pitch four times, with both players winning two games each.
