A pro pickleball tournament hits College Park this weekend

Calling all pickleball fans, the Mid-Atlantic’s premier professional pickleball tournament – the N2grate DC Open – begins today, October 20th. It runs until Sunday October 23 at the Junior Tennis Champions Center (5200 Campus Dr., College Park).

Competitive events that attract players from the East Coast include pro singles, pro doubles, senior pro singles and senior pro doubles for women and men. There are also games for mixed abilities and ages. Gaithersburg native ben johns, a men’s national pickleball champion, is set to compete. He is currently number one in both men’s singles and doubles Professional Pickleball Association. Callie Smith, top ranked player in women’s doubles, and Anna Leigh Walters, top ranked women’s singles player will also perform.

Racquet sports are becoming increasingly popular. It has grown over 40 percent during the last two years, and there are now over 4.8 million players in the US. While the relatively easy and low-impact sport is very popular among seniors, it has also gained traction among younger demographics.
